Black Kitten - Folklore
64When your think of black kittens, what comes to mind? Do you think of cute cuddly balls of fur or are you worried one might cross your path. Most people associate black cats with Halloween or bad luck. When you think about it what really separates a Bombay from a Bengal, besides of course, that the Bombay is black? In Europe at the turn of the 17th century, witches where believed to exist. These queens of the night were thought to have the power to turn themselves into black cats. Many so called witches were burned in that time and often a black cat would be tossed into the flames with them.
Not all counties have a such a bias against black kittens. According to Scottish superstitions a black kitten or cat on your porch brings good luck and prosperity. In Scotland and Britain it's a white cat that will bring you bad luck. In ancient Egypt sacred cats where constantly watched by holy men who used there purrs and movents to make predictions. In Finland it was beleived that black cats were the caretakers of souls that were passing on to the next world.
